Man mauled by tigers: Man hops wall to skip paying zoo admission fee, lands in tiger pen – TomoNews

NINGBO, CHINA — A man visiting the Youngor Zoo suffered death by tigers, after he scaled a wall to get into the zoo for free, but paid the price with his life.

On January 28, the man surnamed Zhang and his coworker surnamed Li decided to take their families for a nice outing at the Youngor Zoo. While their wives walked in the traditional way with Zhang’s children, the two men decided to hop the fence, in an attempt to skip out on paying less than $20 USD each for park admission tickets.

Scaling the zoo’s 10-foot tall outer wall, past warnings and wire netting, they met with another 10-foot wall. While Li stayed back, Zhang forged ahead. Unfortunately, when he dropped down, he didn’t realize he’d just entered tiger territory. Trapped like a rat and surrounded by four big cats, Li walked right into a painful hour of punishment for his grave mistake. Other park visitors could only watch in horror as the four tigers’ curiosity led them to feed on Zhang’s body.

Zoo officials used firecrackers and water cannons to scare away three of the tigers, but one of them was undeterred by the threats, more fascinated with its new play thing. Rather than back off, the tiger batted Zhang around like a ball of yarn, and then stripped off his clothes leaving his flesh exposed. As the tiger dragged his body into the forested area of the enclosure, Chinese special forces finally gunned it down with a bullet. Meanwhile, Zhang was rushed to hospital, but soon died of his devastating injuries.

In the aftermath of the incident, the public is mourning, not for the death of the foolish father of two, but for the dead tiger. A representative of animal rights group PETA has stated “Attacks by captive big cats on people – which occur with staggering regularity – illustrate the profound level of stress, anxiety and agitation these animals experience every day of their lives.”

The tiger’s death is garnering the sympathy of Chinese netizens, much like Harambe the gorilla last year in the U.S. One Weibo user wrote: “This visitor’s death by mauling really does not deserve any sympathy. Tigers are the carnivorous kings of the jungle and hunting for food is their instinct, who can you blame if you jump in and get attacked? Rest in peace, tiger.”

Five Classic Red Wine and Food Pairings

Food and wine pairing is something that some people take very seriously. While the perfect combination of a particular dish with a particular wine can be a marriage made in heaven, with the flavors of each perfectly complementary and highlighting the other, a poor pairing can be a disaster, clashing, bringing out awkward flavors and just simply making each suffer. If you are serious about your food and wine, as I am, then risking destroying a dinner course or the enjoyment of a fine wine is serious business!

That being said, should you be afraid of wine and food pairing? No. The fact of the matter is that there is rarely any one perfect combination of food and wine. For any one dish there may be dozens of wines that would pair very nicely with it. With a little practice, experience and know-how you can pretty easily predict which wines will highlight a dish and which will detract from it.

To begin with, drink what you like to drink with what you like to eat. Do not force yourself to drink a wine you would not normally like to drink just because it is theoretically supposedly to be best for a given cuisine. Also, in general it is best to try to pair wines with foods that have a similar level of flavor intensity. In other words, a richly flavored red wine may not be the best match for a delicate filet of sole. Try to pair wines in such a way that the flavors of the wine or the dish are not completely dominating so that the other suffers in comparison. Beyond these basics, experiment a bit. It helps to make some educated guesses about what will work and what will not. That is where this article comes in. I hope it will give you some ideas as a starting ground to make wise food and wine pairing choices.

Here are a few classic and very basic food and wine pairings for red wines. Understanding these basics, along with some experience with them, will help you to learn why certain wines work well with certain foods so that you can start to make your own pairings that make sense. For white wine pairings, see the companion article "Five Classic White Wine and Food Pairings".

Steak and Cabernet Sauvignon:

Steak is about as hearty a flavor as you can get! Wimpy wines will not stand up to a good steak very well. Likewise, Cabernet Sauvignon based wines, such as California Cabernets and Bordeaux are generally full-bodied wines, with ample power, structure and tannin. These powerful wines can overpower less dishes. A well-marbled, simply grilled steak has an abundance of fat and protein to buffer the power of the wine, cutting and softening the hard tannins of a young red. This allows the fruit and other complexes to stand out. This is a classic combination that rarely disappoints!

Lamb and Bordeaux

Lamb is another red meat which can have bold flavors, often a big gamier than beef. Bordeaux and lamb can be an outstanding combination for this reason. However, there are many different cuts of lamb and different ways to prepare it. Some cuts and preparations are not ideal for Bordeaux or other Cabernet-based wines (see below). For pairing with Bordeaux, look for the more refined and simply prepared cuts such as loin chops, rib chops and a rack of lamb. These classic dishes can be a divine pairing with Bordeaux. More aromatic, rustic and spicy preparations of lamb often call for a wine with a bit more of a chewy, rustic and herbal character.

Lamb and Provençal Red Wines

The other face of lamb is a bit more rustic, less refined. Grilled loin chops or leg of lamb with garlic, rosemary, cayenne and other Southern French seasonings can be wonderful. They are warming, rich and hearty. Less "refined" than a roasted rack of lamb, but they are so soul satisfying that they can be sublime dishes in their own right. However, some of these spicier and more rustic flavors and textures can be a bit much for a more refined full-bodied wine like fine Bordeaux. These Provençal flavors and aromas call for similar gamey, aromatic and spicy flavors in the wine. A perfect combination is wines from the same region. In fact, most cuisines in Europe have grown up over the ages to accompany the wines made nearby, or visa versa. Provençal red wines, in particular Bandol and Chateauneuf-du-Pape, are generally meaty, rich, chewy and also aromatic, infused with the scents of the hillsides of the south of France. Most of the scents of wild rosemary, lavender, thyme and other local herbs and spices. The flavors in the wine can mirror and stand up to the aromas and flavors in these rich lamb dishes.

Stilton and Port

Stilton is one of the classic blue cheeses. Coming from England, Stilton has a rich, creamy texture and a pungent, salty flavor. Port is a red fortified dessert wine from Portugal's Douro Valley. At first glance, it does not sound like a pungent, salty blue cheese should have anything to do with a sweet red wine. However, Port and Stilton is one of the most classic wine and food pairings you can find! The sweet, richness of the wine perfectly balances the salty, creaminess of the cheese. This pairing is often served towards the end of a dinner, either just before the dessert course or in its place. And for an even better pairing, enjoy this combination in the winter, sitting next to a warm toasty fire in your fireplace!

Chocolate and Dessert Wine

I include this as a "classic" wine and food pairing because it is a much talked about one. However, this pairing tends to cause much more controversies than many others. Traditionally it has been felt that a dark, rich and sweet red wine like Port, which can have coffee and chocolate-like nuances to its flavor on its own, is the only wine that can stand up to the dark, rich flavor of chocolate. However, many wine lovers will argue that chocolate is really too strong a flavor for any wine, that chocolate bests speaks for itself and should not be paired with any wine, or maybe just with a small cup of rich coffee as an accompaniment. However, this can vary depending on the type of chocolate and the type of dish. Even some full-bodied, dry red wines have been known to pair well with less-sweet versions of dark chocolates. A much lesser known pairing is a wine from the south of France called Banyuls. Banyuls is a beautiful appellation which produces a fortified wine which is similar to Port in many respects. Different grapes are used but it produces a somewhat similar rich, alcoholic, sweet red wine which is often served after dinner. Something about the more roasted quality to the fruit and the fruitiness that comes from Grenache and other other grapes employed seems to stand up to chocolate quite well.

Well there you have it, five classic food and wine pairings to get you started. Try them out. Try to identify what it is about the wine and food that compliments each other. Pay attention to what the wine does to the flavors of the food and visa versa. By building your palate's experience with food and wine you will be better able to come up with new wine and food pairings in the future. Enjoy!

Birman – The Facts Every Owner Of This Cat Breed Should Know

The history of the Birman cat is steeped in mystery. According to legend, the people of Asia built a temple to worship a golden goddess with sapphire-blue eyes. A priest often knelt in meditation with a white temple cat. One night the temple was attacked at the priest killed. As the priest died, the cat placed his feet upon the priest and faced the golden goddess. As he did, the hairs of his white body turned golden, and his yellow eyes to sapphire-blue, his four white legs turned brown, but where his paws rested, they remained white. Where this legend ends, history begins.

The temple was raided at the beginning of the 20th century. Two westerners, Auguste Pavie and Major Gordon Russell, came to the aid of the victims. As a gesture of gratitude the victors later sent the two men a pair of Birman. The male cat did not survive the trip but the female, who was pregnant, did. The Birman is an average size cat (males generally ranging from eight to twelve pounds, females seven to nine pounds).

Birmans have a medium length coat that requires very little grooming. The coats are usually a light color on the face and darker over the rest of the coat, with golden shades being the most popular. Their eyes are always blue and their paws are white. Birman coats are long but not very strong, so they are not prone to matting. As the third most popular longhaired cat, Birmans are good pets. They tend to enjoy the company of their human families.

Birmans are described as 'soft spoken,' but social and friendly. Birmans are considered sweet and because of this, they are able to adapt well to changes and adore their family. They tend to be a healthy breed; Birmans are generally free from any medical concerns, but some are sensitive to anesthetics. Birmans also require relatively little training and will learn to use the litter box on their own.

How to Treat your Arthritis Naturally

Arthritis is pain in the fingers, knees, elbows, hips jaw-any place in

the body where there is a joint between bones. It can be very painful. This

because joints are surrounded by many nerves and the nerves are needed to make

the complicated joints work properly. There are many forms of arthritis like

Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid; to name just two, but we are not going into that

now. What we are looking at here is natural remedies.

A lot of arthritis sufferers very often turn to natural herbal remedies

and botanical methods to gain release from their symptoms. But do these

natural alternatives do what they promise? Can you find relief from herbal

supplements? There are many herbs and such like that has shown some promise in

helping treat the symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis and we will just look at a

few of them:.

Thunder god vine

A supplement that is derived from a perennial vine that is

native to Asia, also in areas of China, Korea, and Japan. The root is peeled

away to make this herbal supplement and is by tradition, been used to treat

autoimmune illnesses and inflammatory conditions. It has been find by research

that thunder god vine does indeed contain anti-inflammatory activity, and some

immune-boosting activity has also been discovered. One clinical trial carried

out at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center found that roughly

80 per cent of those patients who were given a high dose of the plant

supplement found that their Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms got better

considerably. However, researchers have found that this and other studies are

too small to prove the true efficacy of this plant-derived supplement.


To take away the pain of gout, eat 6-8 cherries per day. They can be

tinned, frozen or fresh. This is a Japanese treatment, which they have used

for centuries. They also boil the cherries down into a syrup which makes a

strong sweet drink. The cherry is a very good source of magnesium (which is a

natural painkiller) and potassium. The potassium acts as a diuretic, reducing

inflammation by ridding tissue of fluid.

Dandelion leaves

One of the best remedies for treating arthritic conditions probably

grows right in your backyard: fresh young dandelion leaves. Because of the

high vitamin A and C content, when eaten raw in salads, these greens help the

body to repair damaged tissues and help the liver clear toxins out of the

blood. European herbalists have used these anti-pain dandelion recipes for

many years. Older leaves should be steam or sauté – like spinach, this is

because they are too tough to eat raw. You can also improve the taste by

cooking with garlic or add olive oil for a tasty dish. Dandelion can also be

made into a tea: Steep, just 1 teaspoon of dried leaves or 3 teaspoons of

fresh leaves in 1 cup of boiling water. Or make a coffee-like, but

bitter-tasting, beverage by boiling, and then straining, 4 ounces of fresh

root in 2 pints of water. Taken daily, this is a good guard against winter


Desert devil Devil’s-claw

An ominous-sounding cure – comes from the Kalahari Desert of South

Africa. For at least 250 years, the Hottentots, Bantus, and Bushmen (all

native tribes of this region) have treated arthritis pain with this large

claw-like fruit that can trap and injure livestock. The tribesmen’s favourite

method is to draw an extract from the root and brew it into a tea.

Alternatively, devil’s-claw can be dried, powdered, and taken in tablet form.

Recent French and German studies found that the pain-relief of devil’s-claw is

similar to that of cortisone. The root acts mainly as an anti-inflammatory, an

effect of harpagoside, its active ingredient. Preparations using the whole

plant work even better because it contains additional compounds, such as

flavonoids, that enhance the anti-inflammatory effect. Devil’s-claw is

available in many forms through most mailorder herb companies and health food



The British, known for their fondness for sweets, swear by crude

blackstrap molasses dissolved in water. When taken every morning, they say

this preparation eases and even eliminates pain in the joints. This is some

feat in England! (Cold, damp climates usually aggravate a case of arthritis.)

The molasses is an excellent source of minerals, including iron, potassium,

and magnesium. It is also a concentrated sweet. So it is important to rinse

your mouth out or brush your teeth after using this treatment. Otherwise, you

may be trading one pain (arthritis) for another – a toothache!

Cooper bracelets

This does vindicate old wives. Until recently, Western doctors dismissed

as folklore the idea of wearing copper bracelets as a way of treating

arthritis. Indeed, there are many doctors who are still sceptical. Researchers

in Australia, however, have found that copper, when coupled with aspirin, is

more effective than aspirin alone in treating the pain of arthritis. Since

many substances are absorbed through the skin, there may be some truth in this

old wives’ tale. Cooper bracelets are available all over the net.


Ginger is very effective in the treatment of arthritis and a host of

other ailments. Recent medical research in Holland has indicated that this,

too, is much more than just myth. Eating ginger does, according to the Dutch

doctors, help alleviate arthritis pain. Use the ginger with anything…soups,

sauces, or salads.

Bee Stings

An arthritis therapy that may sound more like a punishment was used

2,000 years ago by Hippocrates – bee stings. Once considered to be the leading

cure for rheumatism, arthritis, and gout, bee stings were used for centuries

by ancient Europeans.Based on this traditional therapy, scientists in

Switzerland, France, Germany, and Great Britain devised a treatment that

employed a series of injections of the venom- using either a hypodermic needle

or a live bee! The bee venom, like many noxious substances, stimulates the

immune system to release inflammatory substances. This is known as the counter

irritation theory.

Saint Hildegard’s Ointment

Hildegard was a mystic from 12th century Germany whose wisdom still

holds true to day. She said ” Detoxify, purify, and regenerate the whole

organism.” Hildegard’s recipe for an arthritis ointment was to take 4 parts

vermouth, 2 parts deer fat, and 2 parts deer marrow, and mix it into a salve.

This ointment was massaged on the painful joints while the sufferer sat in

front of an elmwood fire. The warmth of the fire and the stimulation of blood

flow from the massage were really the important parts of the treatment. So if

you cannot get your hands on any deer fat. goose fat is a much better option

and is available all over the net. To get rid of the rheumatic toxins that

caused pain, Hildegard prescribed eating fragrant, raw quince. The fruit can

be cooked in water or wine, baked in a cake or pie, or made into jellies and

candy ( this is popular today during holiday seasons). Hildegard’s advice to

gout sufferers was to slowly chew (before breakfast) 1 to 3 teaspoons of

celery seed powder mixed with spices such as rue, cloves, and saxifrage. For a

better taste, the celery powder can be sprinkled on bread with quince jelly.

Celery is a diuretic, and the loss of excess fluid can reduce the inflammation

associated with the arthritis. Rue contains ruin, which can strengthen blood

vessels (preventing them from leaking fluid into tissue and thus preventing

inflammation).Warning: Don’t use rue during pregnancy. It can bring on

Aloe, by its self does not cure or heal anything; it is the

beneficial effects of over 200 different nutritional constituents and the way

they react to help reduce inflammation and pain which promote healing. Aloe

Vera gives a great boost to the immune system and energy levels. So, In other

words…..Aloe Vera provides the body with the right agents to take care of

itself and to restore and repair body functions and the body’s own healing


Many people think that because they are taking an herbal supplement or

botanical-based drug therapy, there will be no side effects. The truth is that

herbal supplements can be quite powerful and can have strong side effects.

Many if not most of all conventional drug therapies are derived from plants

and herbs.

The bad news is that there is not enough sufficient research to

conclusively prove the efficacy of many of these herbal supplements and

botanical-based drugs. Before you try any herbal supplement, it is

important that you discuss its use with your doctor.
