Can I Take Away Weight If I Regularly Eat Fast Food?

Is there such a thing as a non-fattening takeaway or fast-food meal, for my major meal of the day several times per nights a week?

Scottish Asian Business Awards 2015



The 10th annual Scottish Asian Business Awards took place on Wednesday December 9, where the winners were revealed at a glamorous ceremony at the Glasgow City Hotel.
The classy black tie event acknowledged and celebrated the accomplishments, determination and hard work of professionals and organisations from the Asian business community across Scotland. Accolades included Business of the Year, Best Professional of the Year and Small Business of the Year, amongst many others.

Organic Food Trend in Singapore

The new study by the Organic Monitor named The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics & Emerging Trends 2010 reported that the global organic sales reached $ 50.9 billion in 2008, double the $ 25 billion recorded in 2003. Projected growth is between 20 and 30 percents, worldwide.

The organic food trend, which started in the 70s as a reaction to widespread use of agrochemicals in food production is now a major player in the food production and is not just a niche any more. The trend encompasses consumers, agricultural producers, food distributors, farmers, and affects even the financial market.

Organic agriculture started as local phenomena, people growing food mostly for themselves and for their neighbors. This trend grows into a growing popularity of small local producers, which could produce healthy, fresh food on a small scale for a reasonable price.

A lot has changed since. In 2008, land farmed organically in the world totaled 35 million hectares. This acreage was farmed by 1.4 million producers from 154 countries. The area of ​​organic agricultural land increased all over the world by nine percent compared to 2007. The majority – 22 million hectares – were grassland. More than 8.2 million hectares were used for cropland. Almost 31 million hectares that are organic are wild collection areas and land for bee keeping.

The regions with the largest area of ​​organically managed land are Oceania (12.1 million hectares in Australia, New Zealand, and surrounding island states), Europe (8.2 million hectares), and Latin America (8.1 million hectares).

Spire Research and Consulting together with the SP Joint Center of Management, Singapore, published the results of their study, which found that, from the small market in 2002 worth just about S $ 10,000, organic market grew to S $ 68 million in 2008. This growth trend is expected to continue at the rate of 20 to 30 percent per year.

Although the price of organic food in Singapore is about 112 percent higher than the price of the same produce grown traditionally, this did not deter the loyal organic shoppers. Their reason for choosing organic food were the same as in the rest of the world: health safety, superior taste, environmental concern and fashion consciousness.

The suggested measure is to introduce government certification of local organic growers, in order to increase confidence of shoppers.
According to CNN, organic food continued popularity trend parallels other similar trends, all related to the increased health concerns of average consumers: slow cooking, vegetarianism, flexitarianism (mostly plant-based diet), locally grown food and functional foods (foods with added value like vitamins).

The healthy eating is not the only reason for the persistent popularity of organic food. There is also an increased search for healthier lifestyle, especially among baby-boomers, who are reaching retirement age and searching for more meaningful existence. Many are opting for organic agriculture, as a way to live and to feed themselves.

Chinese Food Culture: What Is in a Chinese Meal?

When I go to Chinese restaurants with my Western friends, they would ask me what to order according to Chinese custom.

If you ask any Chinese what kind of dishes make up a meal (for example), most Chinese people would simply say 'four dishes and one soup'.

I am not sure when such a concept of a meal became so popular in China, but that is what is considered as a standard meal. Of course there are many variations from family to family, and depending on the situation (for example, how many people at the table, what you can afford, and so on).

These 'four dishes' typically include a meat dish, a fish dish, and a vegetable dish. The fourth dish can be of your choice. Although this is not a rule by any means, if we have guests at home or go to restaurants, this is normally what we would order. The stable food is usually boiled rice.

And as for how many dishes we would actually prepare, we normally say three dishes for two people, six dishes for five people, and so on: always one or two more than heads. This may strike you as too many, but given that we do not have starters nor cake as desserts in China, it is not unreasonable.

Oh, and it is not a bad thing if there are left overs. Although your host would be happy seeing you finish and enjoy all the dishes, they would also get worried and think the food was not enough. If you ever get invited to have dinner with a Chinese family, never finish all the food on the table, otherwise your host will panic, go to the kitchen and start cooking again.

And I like the idea of ​​sharing, because like this, everyone can taste different food on the table. Of course, if you do not like the idea of ​​everyone using their own chopsticks to pick up the food from the same plate, you can always use a different spoon for each plate.

Coming back to the details of each meal, for example, during weekdays, I would prepare three dishes for each dinner for two of us. The cooking can be very simple and quick. But in China it is essential for each meal to include different food varieties and different kinds of taste.
